UDC Causes Mobile Educational Van (Food Truck)

In 2015, UDC’s College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) developed a way to further propel its tagline – Healthy Cities, Healthy People. CAUSES’ Center for Nutrition, Diet and Health (CNDH), in collaboration with Center for Sustainable Development and Resilience (CSDR), submitted a proposal to the DOEE Challenge Fund, which included the design of an educational mobile van (food truck) to enhance their ability to reach to all underserved communities in DC and provide them with high quality health and diet education. Working through UDC fleet management and DC Department of Public Work, CSDR and CNDH designed a unique food truck to meet their educational purpose. The UDC CAUSES food truck was launched in May 2016 during the re-opening of UDC’s first urban food hub project – East Capitol Urban Farm, located in Ward 7.The truck includes cooking, cooling and preparation equipment, enabling the CNDH’s experts to develop their educational trainings and easily move around the city. The UDC educational food truck enables the land grant centers’ experts to engage communities that have limited transportation options and empowers the community to join trainings that UDC CAUSES provides.
